What each field means
- IP address
- The public address your connection uses to reach the internet. Every site you open sees this one, not the private address your device uses at home.
- ISP
- The company that puts you online: your home broadband, mobile carrier, or hosting provider. It owns the address block this IP comes from.
- Organisation
- Who the address is registered to. Often the same as the ISP, though company and datacentre ranges can name the business directly.
- AS name
- The network the address lives on, tagged with a number like AS15169. Routers use it to decide where your traffic goes.
- Country
- The country the address is registered in. This is the one field you can almost always trust.
- Region
- The state or province. Usually right for home lines, less so for mobile or VPN traffic.
- City
- A best guess at the city. Read it as a rough area, not a street.
- Postal code
- The ZIP or postal code for that rough area. Approximate, and often blank.
- Timezone
- The timezone for the estimated location, handy for guessing when someone is likely online.
- Coordinates
- Latitude and longitude for the area, pointing at the middle of a city or region rather than a building.
- Proxy / VPN
- Whether the address looks like a VPN, proxy, or hosting service instead of an ordinary home connection.
- Currency
- The local currency of the country, inferred from the location.
How IP location is worked out
No address carries GPS. The location is pieced together from the registries that hand out address blocks, what ISPs publish about where they use them, and databases that track how addresses behave. It is inference, not a reading off your device.
Country is reliable. City is a fair guess for fixed home lines and a loose one for everything else. Nobody pulls a street address out of an IP on its own.
An address can trace to an ISP hub in the next city, a mobile gateway in the capital, or a datacentre abroad. That is normal, not a mistake in the lookup.
Public, private, IPv4 and IPv6
The address shown here is your public one, the single address your whole network presents to the outside world. Anything starting 192.168 or 10. is a private address that only exists inside your home or office.
IPv4 looks like 203.0.113.5 and the world is running out of them. IPv6 is the longer form, like 2001:db8::1, made because we needed far more. You may have both, and a site sees whichever your connection used to reach it.
Your phone, laptop, and TV usually share that one public address. The router gives each device a private address and translates on the way out, so the lookup cannot tell them apart.
Why your IP might look wrong
Then you see the VPN's server instead of yourself: a different city, often a different country, usually flagged as a hosting address. That is the VPN working as intended.
Carriers funnel many users through a handful of gateways, so the city shown is often where the carrier's kit sits, not where you are.
Some providers register a whole region to one hub, so a home line can surface a city an hour away.
Offices, campuses, and cafés send everyone out through one address, registered to the organisation rather than any person.
What an IP does and doesn't reveal
The network an address belongs to, the ISP or company running it, a rough location, and whether it reads as a home line, a datacentre, or a VPN. Enough to place a server or sanity-check a line in your logs.
A name, a house, or a person. An IP points at a connection, and connections get shared, reassigned, and routed through other places. Anyone claiming your exact address from an IP alone is guessing.

How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is usually accurate to the city or region level, based on where the ISP has registered the address block. It is rarely precise enough to identify a street address, and mobile or satellite connections can be off by a much wider margin.
Can I find out who owns an IP address?
A lookup shows the ISP or organization the address is registered to, along with its ASN (autonomous system number). It identifies the network operator, not the individual person using the connection at any given moment.
Why does my IP show a different city than where I am?
Mobile carriers often route traffic through a regional gateway, so a phone's IP can be registered to a city some distance from the handset.
A VPN or corporate proxy has the same effect, since the address that reaches the internet belongs to the VPN server or exit node, not your own location.
Is IP geolocation accurate?
Country, nearly always. City, often, for a fixed home connection. Past that it is an estimate: mobile, VPN, and business connections can be well off, and no lookup reaches a street address.
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
No. An IP maps to your ISP and a rough area, not a house. Only your ISP can link an address to an account, and only with a legal request. In public, the most anyone sees is the general area.
How do I change or hide my IP?
A VPN or proxy shows their address instead of yours. Restarting your router can get you a new one if your ISP assigns addresses dynamically. Switching to mobile data gives you a different address from your home line.
What is the difference between my IP and my router's IP?
Your router has two. The public address the world sees is the one shown here. The private one, usually 192.168.0.1 or similar, is what your own devices use to reach the router. Only the public address leaves your network.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number names the network an address sits on, such as AS15169 for Google. It is a steadier way to say who runs an address than the number itself, since a network keeps its ASN while individual IPs come and go.
